Train the system, not the screen.

Endurance coaching · Traverse City, MI
Science-backed endurance coaching for cyclists across all levels. Individualized programming for gravel, mountain bike, cyclocross, and road.
Endurance sports have a way of taking us to interesting places — not just on the map, but within ourselves.
They teach patience, consistency, resilience, and curiosity. They connect us with new people, new experiences, and a deeper understanding of what we're capable of.
At Northbound Endurance, coaching is about more than preparing for a single race. It's about building lasting fitness, pursuing meaningful goals, and finding adventure in the process.
Four principles shape every plan we build. They're the lens we use when reading your data, adjusting your week, and planning the next phase.
From base to build, we train your physiology to meet the demands of your events and align with your goals. Aerobic base, fatigue resistance, and metabolic efficiency guide every workout decision.
Your plan is built around your physiology, your race calendar, and the hours you actually have — tailored to your life on and off the bike. What works for you may not work for someone else, and we're here to build the plan that does.
Peak weeks aren't impressive if April never makes it to November. We build athletes who hold their fitness, recover faster, and finish the year stronger than they started.
Some weeks you crush it. Some weeks life crushes you. Sustainable progress is built week in, week out — with the necessary modifications to fit your schedule.
Underneath all four is a simple discipline: train at a level that ensures continued development. More is not always better. Many athletes experience fatigue and burnout from overtraining, which results in setbacks and stalled progress. A holistic view of your fitness, lifestyle, and goals is what keeps training healthy and progress consistent.
Whether you're looking for a fully individualized coaching relationship or a structured training plan that you can use on your own, every plan is built around the same principles: purposeful training, long-term development as a rider, and sustainable progress.
Ongoing coaching partnerships delivered through TrainingPeaks — with communication, workout feedback, and individualized adjustments built around the way your week actually unfolds.
Individualized training plans built around your physiology, goals, and lifestyle. We'll develop a long-range plan, adapt it as needed, and work together on training, recovery, fueling, and race execution.

Athletes who coach, coaches who race — thinking about performance every day, right alongside the athletes they work with.
Mike McCall is a cycling coach, lifelong endurance athlete, and founder of Northbound Endurance. His passion for human performance took root while earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Indiana University with a pre-med and exercise science focus. That academic foundation, combined with years of training, racing, and coaching, has shaped a coaching philosophy that blends evidence-based training principles with practical experience, helping athletes build lasting fitness, perform at their best, and balance training with the demands of everyday life.
For Mike, effective coaching starts with understanding the individual. Every athlete has unique goals, strengths, challenges, and responsibilities off the bike, and no two respond to training the same way. He believes the athlete-coach relationship is the foundation of long-term success, working closely with each athlete to build training around their physiology, lifestyle, and goals.
Based in Traverse City, Michigan, Mike enjoys exploring Northern Michigan's endless network of trails and adventure routes. He regularly competes in many of the region's premier mountain bike and gravel events and enjoys training and racing alongside many of the athletes he coaches.
Mike believes endurance sports are about far more than fitness and results. They're an opportunity for adventure, personal growth, and connection with a larger community. He founded Northbound Endurance to help athletes pursue meaningful goals, embrace the process, and discover what they're truly capable of along the way.
Kyan Olshove is a professional cyclist from Traverse City, Michigan. He came up on Northern Michigan's trails through Norte, the local youth cycling development program, and won the junior division of the Iceman Cometh Challenge in 2019 before turning his focus to elite racing.
Since then, Kyan has raced with the USA Development Cycling Team and the Bear National Team, the nation's top U23 development squad. His accomplishments include a podium finish at the 2023 Iceman Cometh Challenge and a fourth-place finish at the 2024 U23 National Championships. In his first season competing at Lifetime Grand Prix qualifying events, Kyan finished second overall in the Men's Pro field at Chequamegon and added top-10 finishes at both Big Sugar and Little Sugar. His consistent performances earned him a full-season spot in the 2026 Lifetime Grand Prix.
Kyan's coaching is shaped by experience at the highest levels of cycling, but it's designed for athletes of all abilities. Having worked with some of the sport's top coaches and put their methods into practice through elite competition, he combines firsthand racing experience with proven training principles to create practical, individualized training plans. He works with a diverse group of athletes, from youth riders he mentors at events like Marquette Trails Fest to competitive master's athletes across the country. Despite a busy 2026 race schedule, Kyan continues to coach athletes who want to learn from someone actively competing at the highest level of the sport.

Training finally feels like it fits the rest of my life. I'm stronger, more consistent, and enjoying the process more than ever.
I've followed plenty of training plans over the years, but this is the first time I've truly understood why I'm doing each workout. The coaching, feedback, and communication have been just as valuable as the training itself.
Instead of just getting harder workouts, I got a coach who understands how to balance training with work, family, and recovery. The progress has been steady, sustainable, and far beyond what I expected.
Every training plan feels like it was built specifically for me. My strengths are developing, my weaknesses are improving, and I show up to races with far more confidence.
Northbound Endurance has changed the way I think about training. I'm riding stronger than ever, but more importantly, I'm enjoying the journey instead of just chasing the next result.
Northbound camps put you on the gravel, singletrack, and rolling country roads we know by heart. A few days of structured riding paired with the conversations that move performance — alongside guest experts in areas like strength training, sports nutrition, and recovery.
Small group sizes. Real coaching, not a guided tour. You'll leave with sharper tools, better data on yourself, and a plan for how the rest of the season fits together.
Send us a note through the form and we'll follow up to schedule a free intro call — a conversation about your riding and where you want to take it.
